Well I got the zf for $200 and he steam cleaned it for me. I will pick it up op on Monday.
As far as the transfer case thats on there what price should i ask for it?
The data plate is missing on the cummins is that going to be a big deal? I have heard about cummins needing the data plate numbers or they wont sell you stuff? I guess because these engine are stolen often.

Should be a BW1356, $50 or more, whatever you can get out of it. If someone needs one they are a $400+ rebuild.
The ID plate isn't a big deal. Every part in that engine has a cummins part number on it, down to the smallest bearing and bracket. If you have to have a CPL number for something you can just get a CPL and serial number off another 91.5-93 cummins engine and be fine.
Cummins dealerships rely heavily on the CPL tag. Thier whole parts system is pretty screwy. I'd rather deal with someone else on the grounds the parts are a lot less expensive and the guys generally know what your talking about.
The only parts in that engine you'd really need the numbers or cpl/serial for are the pistons and injector nozzles. There are a couple dozen different piston designs for NA, turbo non-emissions, turbo emissions, marine, etc. I mix and match parts from different CPL's to get what I need. The latest 4BTA I'm putting together has 370HP marine pistons and 330 HP marine injector nozzles in it.

That half moon piece is thr ust bearing from your crankshaft. Common problem on the real early engines, but I thought they fixed it before yours was made. You'll want to check your bearings out now and make sure the crank hasn't eaten into the block where the thrust bearing should have been.

Cummins used a thrust bearing with a design that made it possible for the thrust surfaces to come apart and fall into the pan in real early engines. Most every early engine made had the thrust bearing go out at some point. The problem was supposed to have been fixed before the engines ever made into dodges in 89 though.
It's a bad sign, but can be a real simple fix, just depends on how much damage (if any) was done.
The thrust bearing is the upper shell of number 6 main bearing. They're numbered front to rear.

I will look through the service manual and see if I can find anything on the thrust bearing. I am guessing it goes between 6 and the block above the crank?? Do I need to pull the crank to see where it would have scored the block. If it is scored, does that mean the block is no good?
Hopefully there is a good illustration in the manual to look at!!
I did find this. Is this it?

re: mljjones67 project update
Here are some pics of the ZF s5-42 I picked up today. It does have a rebuilt plate on it. So I am hoping that it wasnt to long ago that was done.
t-case will be up for sale here locally I wont be using it. Still looking for the np205 and dana 44 or 60 hp

EDIT: OK I see from the previous post. Looks like some bearing replacement is in order. I will be doing the same.

The H1C (stock) w/ a 16cm non-wastgated exhaust housing will support 300 hp no problem!mljjones67 wrote:Well I guess a turbo upgrade will come in time too!
I want to shoot for 300 hp and I think 700 ftlbs torque.
What turbo do you suggest?

Yes, that could be welded by a competent weld shop. Or just keep shopping e-bay for a deal.mljjones67 wrote:Would it be possible to weld the vacuum pump housing back together and be strong enough to use? If not I would like to go hydroboost. Is there a way to just mount the steering pump to the timing case? but it still would b easier to use the vacuum brakes in the truckalready.

just curious on gas engine mated z5's, do any have a bolt pattern for an FE?
and are they worth a swap? or is an NP435 the best for 4x4 with FE? Sorry to steal thread Mike.

I don't want to give em a heart-attack. That is what would happen if I answered the door in the buff. Heck it almost scares me to death when I step out of the shower and look in the mirror.~Mancar1~
