68 CS Project: update 4/16/09

Yeah AC

I have power at the wire that connects to the coil from the iginition...
It is connected to the + side of the coil, the wire coming from the dizzy is connected to the - side.
I am going to try to clean the contact points real good and hook things back up... I have another coil I'm going to try as well.
I have a pertronics points eliminator on another engine...
I don't know if it is any good or not, I wasn't gonna try it out until after I got it running.
Everything worked ok when I pulled it into the barn a couple of months ago...

The coil wire on it now, is a brand new, make it yerself one...
I still have the old coil wire, so I'm gonna try that this evening...
I also have another coil to try if swappin' the coil wire doesn't work.
I'm also gonna double check the firing order to make sure I have the new wires in the right order.
I'm pretty sure they are, but ya never know...
I have done stranger things in my life than get plug wires outta order...

I have a Pertronics unit on another engine that I wanted try, but,
I was reading on another thread, that you have to replace the pink resisitor wire to install the pertronics unit, so I have been hesitant about doing that until after I have it running again.
I'll probably just pickup a new set of points and a condencer for the time being... then when I do try out the pertronics unit, I will have a good back up set of points and condencer should it not not work or fail...
But then I'd have ta figure out something to do about the resistor wire...
I let everyone know how things go this evening...

If it is the pertronix 1 kit, you don't have to remove the resister wire. I ran mine for 6 years with know problems.
Also check that you put the ignition wire back on the starter solinoid, on the I terminal.

Hey Guys...

It runs !!!
Here's what I did this evening...
I had the plug wires in the correct firing order... but they were one hole off...
I started with #1 on the wrong side of the rear clip...
I figured that was it... wrong, it still wouldn't hit a lick...
Next, I swapped coil wire with one I knew was good... still nothin'
Then, I swapped coils... still nothin...
So, I decided I was gonna put the new points and condencer I bought today in...
On my way out to my van to get them, I stopped in my tracks, and thought hmmm, I should try the Pertronics unit that I took off of the 361FT I got from Mike (can't for the life of me remember his handle here).
Since it was the "Type 1" ignitor I didn't haveta change the pink resistor wire after all.
After installing it, I tried cranking it over and it started sputterin', but not starting... I sprayed some starting fluid in the carb, and it sputtered to life and died... since I knew pretty much the whole system had been drained of gas except the tank itself, I figured I'd primer the carb with some gas... but the can was empty...
I went to the station and got 5 gals of gas, poured some in a can and the rest in the tank...
After primming the carb a couple times and cranking it over, it spitted and sputtered and ran rough for minute or so then smoothed out and ran like a top...

Yes !!! All could do was say, "Thank You, Jesus"...
You see, my friend Jesus likes ta work on the truck with me...

Here's what's left to do in phaze one
Install battery box (about half way done)
Install grille
Install hood hinges
Install gravel guard
Install bumper
Clean up the hood and put it on...
Bleed and adjust brakes... brake pedal engagement adjustment???
Drive the puppy home
Off-load the camper
Clean up my mess at Kyle's
Have exhaust pipes welded

3/22/08 update

It was a long day. but got most of the stuff done I wanted to...
the CS is about ready to come home...
I just haveta put the hood hinges on and bolt the hood on...
Now, I ran into a snag with the column wirng...
My turn signals aren't working right.. everything is mis-matched...
When I turn the left signal the horn relay tries to blink...
I was going to try anther wiring sequence and broke one of the pins
I'm not sure how to fix that short of cutting one off of another harness or something.
As I was hooking up the choke cable, I discovered that the piece that works the butterfly is broken... no wonder, it's stinkin' made out of plastic.
I'll take a couple of pics and post them later...

And got the tool box back on
Man, gotta love the PS/PB/Pertronics unit upgrades...
Now, I wonder how I went 20 years with out them

Kapt'n ---- I'm at the other end of the spectrum---just got my shop straightened out and my truck in--so I can start Upon cleaning my shop,I came across an old honing wheel(you know old--about
20"dia.)that I was gonna recreat the stand to,but never got around to.Do you sharpen your own swords? Or should I say--would this be of any intrest to you for your hobby? I don't want any $ for it and split shipping cost---if your interested----I hate to just through it away

Hey 67mann...

I actually only have one of my swords that is full battle ready...
It's a hand forged 14th century replica...
It's the only one I keep sharpened... since it doesn't get used for anything, (except for cuttin' up a watermelon or two) I just use a 2 sided hand stone.
If I was real crafty, I would jump on this, in a heart beat, but really don't know what I could do with it...
I really appreciate the offer...
Rather than throwing it away, you could try posting it on craigslist or ebay and probably get a pretty good price for it...

Here's what's left to do in phaze one

Install driver's side battery support
(Just won the bidding on one on e-bay this evening)
Install 2 marine battery boxes (lower priority)

Looks great Bro, Iknow it felt good the get her back on the road!
I bet that PS/PB really felt good if you were used to standard, quite honestly I am suprised that a CS came out without them, I certianly would not yank a camper with no PS...ouch! The power brakes, at least the electric brakes for the camper would help with that. I remember backing in those deauce and a halfs in the Army with no PS, but hell then I could do 100 push-ps without blinking an eye too....

In a year or two, I want to pull the front clip off of mine, and do basically the same thing, I will be getting the parts up till then, you free to come out and help?

Looks great!, get those last few things buttoned up, and throw a paint job on her, and I don't doubt that you'll have one of the best looking trucks in town....

I really like the semi gloss idea for the body...
One of my friend's husband used to build rods..
He said what they used to do was tint white primer to whatever color
they wanted...
After the paint cured, he said that they would put several coats of wax over it which would give it that satiny finish...
Hey said that to this day, he hadn't seen anything that matches the effect obtained using that method...
I like that idea...
