68 CS Project: update 4/16/09

Thanks Guys...

Alot of this project is unchartered territory for me...
I've never torn anthing down this far with the intention of putting it back together.
I can't believe how long it has taken to get this far...
Most of the time has been preporation and chasing down parts...
The $85 dollar a month 10'x20' storage unit I rented to work on the truck as become a mini warehouse filled with bump parts...
I even had to build a 5'x8' platform raised 5.5 feet off the ground to store longer large parts like grilles and the rad support support on... that way I had more floor space..
I joke about it...
When I rented the space to put my pickup in, I didn't know I was gonna have to dissasemble it first...
That's the only way I could have gotten the whole truck in the unit.
I was sure it would fit, but it won't...
At one point, I had the entire '71 CS minus the cab, bed and frame... every other piece down to every nut and bolt was or is still in the unit.
I've been looking for something big enough to house the truck and the parts, but haven't found anything yet.
I am blessed to have a friend who has let me use his barn this winter to house the truck so I can work on it outta the rain...
When I finish the '68 CS project, I'm gonna be thinning things out in the storage unit quite a bit, because almost everything that is now in my bus will need to go in the storage unit so I can get back to work on the bus...
Thanks to Kieth and the guys here on fordification, I've been able to do things that were way beyond my knowledge and skill level...

Hey Kaptn, what are your plans for the bus? Will it be a restoration, conversion, custom, color, etc? That thing is WAY !!! Can't wait to see some more!

Hey F100builder,

After I get the '68 CS back on the road, I'll go back to work on the bus (which is a workshop right now).
It is going to be converted to a camper...
I say camper because it won't be a full fleged "motorhome" conversion.
I wanna be able to use it for a multi purpose space.
I do medieval reenactment with the SCA so I want the interior to resemble a medieval workshop/dwelling
My plan is to be able to take the bus to differant events and set up shop to make and sell "medieval stuff" to pay my way to the events and possibly make a little money as well.
These events go year around and are in every state.
If a person wanted to, they could attend a differant event just about every weekend of the year.

I like that...
They talked about the guys back then carrying a flail...
I don't have one of those... yet, but I do usually carry at least 3 knives...
a throwing axe, a one handed sword, sometimes my two handed early claymore (the Braveheart style one) on my back, and my 7 foot Celtic thrusting spear...
I still need to make a scabbard for my 12.5" bladed 14th century style ballock dagger so I can carry it...
I thought I had a pic of it to post fopr ya, but it is on my puter at home...

i go to a ren faire they have here in council bluffs, but demoines has a set up with a castle and some olde style shops already set up on some park grounds. i dont have a whole out fit but i got some high quality hand made bracers made by an old man, plus my longsword and battle axe, but i cant take the axe cause the head has to be covered and its awkward carrying that around.

Hey aramil...

This is gettin' a little off subject, but is your axe a double bit (hero style) or single bit (viking style) axe?
Either way, you can make a simple cresent shaped blade cover outta a couple pieces of leather and some boot laces...
For carring it, you can make a baldric...
It goes over one shoulder and hangs to the opposite hip.
If you want to carry it on your back go to the hardware store and get a tool hanger that will fit your axe... they're just a u shaped piece of flat stock with a cut out in the middle for the axe handle...
You cover that with some leather and attach it to the baldric...
You can also make an axe frog...
That's just like a leather tube that the axe handle goes thru.
It's a flat piece of leather with holes on each end and has leather laces so you can adjust the fit for your axe... it attaches to the baldric at the hip like a sword would, and you can wear your axe on the side just like one would wear a sword...

I have alot afun with the SCA and other activities like Highland Games and Ren Faires..I always go in full garb to those events.. I have about 4 basic costumes that can mixed and matched to look like several more...

its a single bit with a small spike instead of a second bit, i was thinking along the lines of the baldric since i usually carry my sword on my hip and a sword and axe would be alot of wieght to put on a belt. i plan on getting a full garb, but alot of it is expensive. ive been going to the same ren faire since i was ten so ive been going for eight years, but the one here is starting to lose funding and might not be here this summer.

i looked into the sca and i plan on getting in to as soon as i learn a trade so i can be more involved in it.

this did get very of topic but my dad says my bump is midevil so it works.

Hey aramil...

It's not too expensive if ya make almost everything yerself like I do...
Almost all of my garb has been hand sewn with a needle and linen thread.
I've gotten most of my material at thrift shops or off the Wal*Mart sales rack...
After hand sewing a couple full costumes, I finally broke down and bought a sewing machine and have made a couple of lienes (Irish long shirts) and another overtunic.
I had a lady friend make me a full circle wool cloak...
I got the material at the thrift store for something like $8.00 and then found a ladies belt with a nice clasp for a couple of bucks...
I bought her the thread and stuff she needed so I have about $15 into a $100+ dollar cloak if I was to buy it pre-made.
N E way, I gotta go...

Kap, all this talk of axes, swords and spears gives me an idea.Since we are all upstanding, pillar of the community type folks here how about we form a Fordification SWAT team?

I don't know how people would react to a knight in shining armor but I figure the sight of a bunch of costumed, sword bearing, axe weilding guys in a 40 year old truck with a few mummified (fake of course) skulls hanging from the mirrors ought to scare the H*** out of anybody.

Yeah AC, you can say that again...

I gotta get back over to Kyle's and swap the coil and put the pertronics unit in and see if I can get the '68 CS started...
Since power is getting to the coil and it is cranking over nice and fast
(the new starter and the new 2 gauge cables really make a differance).
Wouldn't that pretty much narrow it down to the coil or the connections at the coil?
There is no fire coming out of the coil when it's grounded and I crank it over.
Is there anything else the would cause the coil itself to not fire ???
Doesn't the coil power the points and condencer, if the connections are bad there or the coil itself is bad then there wouldn't be anything at the points right ???
I'm pretty sure I have the wires hooked up right on the coil... but I could be wrong...
I'll be the first to admit I've been wrong before, and will definately be wrong again...

Wire from the harness goes to + side of the coil.The wire from the distributor goes to the - side.You'll need to make sure the connections are clean and tight.Also make sure the point gap is in spec.If they don't open it won't fire.Yes coils do fail but not very often.

We checked to point gap it was right on, and the points were opening and closing, but no spark.
Am I wrong in assuming that the coil wire should have fire when you crank it over and ground it out to the engine??
Wouldn't it do that even if the distributor wire wasn't hooked up?
I'm trying to figure out which way the electricity flows from the switch.
I am assuming that since the engine cranks and there is power getting to the coil that the flow stops at the coil, since there isn't anything past that point.

Wire from the distributor has to be hooked up for the coil to fire.With the key on but not cranking check for power at the + side of the coil.If it doesn't have power the problem is somewhere between the ignition switch and the coil.
