PS Cooler

Post by bwc302 »

I see trucks in the gallery and that yard pic's that have a PS Cooler on them. Is this item really needed (I don't see them on later model trucks so was curious if the older Steering boxes had problems with the box getting hot).

I understand that putting a cooler on the box should help extend it's life, but was curious.

Thanks,

Bobby

I don't think it's absolutely mandatory that it has a cooler, but as you mentioned, it will extend the life. Most of the trucks that I've seen with a cooler were higher trim-level trucks, like Camper Specials or trucks with A/C. I guess I don't really know for sure how they determined who got them and who didn't.

I have one on mine, and it would have extended the life if the kid before me took better care of this truck. The ps fluid stays cool so that it doesn't break down or harm any seals. But I guess that's just a bunch of hooha when your pump doesn't pump. lol

I know this is supposed to work on transmission cooling, I am considering getting one, but would this little jewel work on the power steering as well? I dig the looks of it. they have several different colors on ebay that I have seen. I know they are large, but I wonder......

Here is a 12" one. A little closer. This store has tons of useful stuff for a rebuild if you aren't interested in stock. Cool stuff at reasonable prices.

Sure, there's no reason why you couldn't use the ones pictured above. It would definitely look better and be a bit easier on the hands than the mini-radiator type that sits up on top of the PS pump, and seems to snag a few layers of skin every time you're up under the hood.

Another option to the PS-pump-mounted cooler is the '73-up PS cooler, readily found in salvage yards for next to nothing. They can be polished up and look sharp. It's what I'm using on my project:
