68 CS Project: update 4/16/09

Well Guys,

It wuz another busy weekend at the barn...
My 2-do list got quite a bit shorter... here's what's left now

Things left to do...

Finish hanging exhaust pipes
Install P-side outer fender
Install windshield washer tank
Hook up the rest of the wiring
Install battery box (about half way done)
Install grille
Install hood hinges
Install gravel guard
Install bumper
Change motor oil
Put in coolant
Hook up the battery and FIRE IT UP !!!
Check everything for leaks
Clean up the hood and put it on...
Bleed and adjust brakes... brake pedal engagement adjustment???
Drive the puppy home
Off-load the camper
Have exhaust pipes welded

Clean up my mess at Kyle's

Two coats of white on the head light doors


One coat of white on the grille


Nearly completed engine compartment P-side

I have ran into another little snag...
It seems that all of the square spot welded nuts on the inner fender are missing.
I figured that out when I went to install my hood hinges, there are just square holes where the nuts should be...
I'm gonna have to get some fender washers, nuts and bolts to mount the hinge on that side.
The same with fender bolt holes (might be able to use "J" nuts on those I can't tell).
It seems like the closer I get, the more snags I run into...

I'm looking for the same effect on a 67 grille, yours has came out nice.

What size engine again?

Your power steering looks like it's running on the front pulley?

Also like the battery box idea, (it's a shame what our batteries do to our trucks).

Thanks man.
Yeah, I saw the marine battery box and said for $7.00 it's goin' in my truck. I'm not gonna replace another inner fender.
With the sealed batteries, that might not be a problem any more, but why take chances...
The engine's a high perfomance 390 w/np435,
Edlebrock Street Performer 390 intake w/Holley 650.
I'm not sure on the cam size, but it ain't stock.
The PS belt is actually on the 3rd groove from the crank.
There is a single pulley, then a triple one, that's the only groove the belt would fit on and be straight with the pump pully.
The other groove is for the A/C unit when I get it installed (I have the unit already).

Well Guys, it was another busy weekend workin' on the CS...
Got to cross a few more things of my list..

I ran into a snag with the column wiring sio I will be revisiting to figure out what's wrong..

Ytred ti fire the beast up this evening... it cranked great, but refused to start... there is no fire at the coil although there is fire getting to the coil...
Not exactly sure whats goin' on and I was too tired to do any trouble shooting this evening... That will be another thread...

Very nice work Kaptn! I just read the entire thread from start to finish as I hadn't noticed it earlier. I love the project progress photos! I really need to get out and button up the last few items on mine but it's hard to pull away from family obligations, work, bad weather, etc. I still need to install my grille, valance, and bumper. Then, I've got to rewire the whole thing bumper to bumper. Finally, I wanted to pull the guts out of another pair of doors to replace my '69's rattling, leaking, and inoperable door guts! Good luck on your project!

Alot of this project is unchartered territory for me...
I've never torn anthing down this far with the intention of putting it back together.
I can't believe how long it has taken to get this far...
Most of the time has been preporation and chasing down parts...
The $85 dollar a month 10'x20' storage unit I rented to work on the truck as become a mini warehouse filled with bump parts...
I even had to build a 5'x8' platform raised 5.5 feet off the ground to store longer large parts like grilles and the rad support support on... that way I had more floor space..
I joke about it...
When I rented the space to put my pickup in, I didn't know I was gonna have to dissasemble it first...
That's the only way I could have gotten the whole truck in the unit.
I was sure it would fit, but it won't...
At one point, I had the entire '71 CS minus the cab, bed and frame... every other piece down to every nut and bolt was or is still in the unit.
I've been looking for something big enough to house the truck and the parts, but haven't found anything yet.
I am blessed to have a friend who has let me use his barn this winter to house the truck so I can work on it outta the rain...
When I finish the '68 CS project, I'm gonna be thinning things out in the storage unit quite a bit, because almost everything that is now in my bus will need to go in the storage unit so I can get back to work on the bus...
Thanks to Kieth and the guys here on fordification, I've been able to do things that were way beyond my knowledge and skill level...

Hey F100builder,

After I get the '68 CS back on the road, I'll go back to work on the bus (which is a workshop right now).
It is going to be converted to a camper...
I say camper because it won't be a full fleged "motorhome" conversion.
I wanna be able to use it for a multi purpose space.
I do medieval reenactment with the SCA so I want the interior to resemble a medieval workshop/dwelling
My plan is to be able to take the bus to differant events and set up shop to make and sell "medieval stuff" to pay my way to the events and possibly make a little money as well.
These events go year around and are in every state.
If a person wanted to, they could attend a differant event just about every weekend of the year.
