FINALLY got a shop day today...

Post by FORDification »

I was able to spend some time at the shop today working on the '67, for the first time in several months. What little spare time I've had lately I've been working on the forums, so today it was nice to go get my hands dirty.

It was very chilly here today, right at the freezing mark, so the first thing I did was crank up the furnace for the first time this season. Unfortunately, something went wrong with it over the summer....it's not kicking on like it's supposed to. I think it's something to do with the fan solenoid, because it would try to fire up, but even though the fan isn't locked up, it wouldn't start spinning. After working for several hours with the temp at 48F, I wired up a box fan behind it to push a little heat out, which brought it up to about 60F. Still too cold to do any filler work, which is what I was planning to do, so I'm gonna have to get someone to come take a look at it ASAP.

Anyway, about a month ago I picked up a right-side door from Mark (4x4x4crewcab) which needs some work, but less work than the two spares I had. Someone had already gotten started patching two small rust areas along the bottom:

I got the door stripped to bare metal and ready to finish up repairs:

...and then got the door mounted and adjusted:

Since I couldn't to any filler work to the door, I had to find other things to do. I spent a little time working on the wiring harness, replacing some bad wires from several spares I have. Now the wiring harness is ready to go. :D

Then I decided to get the Unity spotlight mounted, since I needed to get the holes drilled before anything gets painted. Here's a shot taken with the installation about 99% done:

Image

(You'll have to excuse the mess....my poor truck has been accumulating dust for several months.) This installation was interesting, since I needed a 12"-long 1/2" drill bit which I didn't have...so I drilled in about 6" with the 1/2" bit I did have, then used a long 1/4" bit to drill a pilot hole all the way through, and then used the 1/2" bit from the other side. I took some more pics of the installation and will get them posted soon.

Keith,

That's cool, (the door mounted spotlight/not the temperature). :D

The heater sounds like a fan capacitor or the fan relay.
Sure wish I were closer to give you a hand.

I had a local business stop by and check out that furnace, turns out the fan AND the fan relay were both bad. The fan itself was $245...don't know about the relay yet. But at least I'll have heat in there again by the weekend, which is good....I'm actually gonna get in another shop day this weekend. If I stop by the shop on the way home from work Friday night and crank it up full blast, it might make it up to 70F by Saturday morning...and if it is, it'll be warm enough to completely finish up the last of the necessary filler work , and then the truck will finally be ready to paint. :yip:

Unfortunately, I won't be able to paint it until springtime...unless we get a week or so of Indian summer. However, I'm not going to hold my breath on that. I guess I'll spend the winter getting everything else ready...maybe even finally get started on deciding which engine to use (390 or 460) and getting it rebuilt.
