new arm rests - poor fit

Post by MAK »

I got some new arm rests last week for my 72 from LMC. Very disappointing. Aside from the fact that they're not exactly what I would call a close reproduction, they don't fit. When attached and snugly tightened against the metal door panels they press so tightly against the bottom portion of the door handle that when you open the door the handle stays wedged in the open position... When you remove the arm rests you can see the deep indention of the door handle along the bottom of the rest showing that they didn't provide near enough clearance compared to the originals. I've tried shimming the rests out with a bunch of washers but by the time I get enough clearance for the handle it leaves almost a 1/4" gap all the way around between the arms rest and door panel...
Anyone else bought new arm rests and have the same problem or find some that fit?? I'm guessing that all the vendors are probably selling the same ones from the same manufacturer? I can't count the number of times I've bought reproduction parts for various vehicles and they don't fit. Can't understand how they can continue to sell the junk.

I got mine from NPD this weekend. They are factory originals as the fomoco emblem is molded into the back. The are new reproductions though. They have metal inserts to prevent over tightning. They feel soft like new leather. Exact fit! 2 Thumbs up here!

That's what I wanted to hear. Pisses me off to loose the money on these shipping them here and back but at least I can get some that fit. These are heavy and feel like solid rubber... like a tire.

I ordered some for my 67 from LMC, but haven't tried them yet. Anyone tried these before?

I had ordered the repros from LMC and they were a poor quality were a foam deal that is sprayed with some crap and it was already flaking off in the bag. Then the screw holes were so shallow you could see the nonoriginal phillips heads on the mounting screws that came with em by just loooking down at them. Sent em back and spent the extra money on the Dennis Carpenters and I am happy with these. LMC is good for a few little things but you have to pick and choose where your willing to spend the extra money for quality.

I haven't bought that much repop stuff but so far have never found anything that was oem quality and fit. Maybe half dozen times on sheetmetal and never had a decent fit. Several restoration items from Mac's and it was all junk. No wonder NOS parts are so high, they are the only real thing to restore a car with.
