Post by Manny »

Well i've been doing some work on the old girl finally so i figured with me posting on the other sites i visit i would stop in to post up here what's been goin on.

I've rebuilt the rear end with a fresh 4.10 gear set to correct the slightly chipped pinion gear.
Image

I also corrected the overcharging and dealt with the overcharging issue. I got 2 bum voltage regulators in a row. Go figure it'll drive you mad. Then i fixed the battery tray.
Image

Then i hitched up loaded up some wood in the bed, and headed for chattanooga the truck did really well, and pulled the load well.
Image

Why you ask well let see pic one religious floor bed.
Image

No rusted bed.
Image

Some paint to cummins beige color. It actually works pretty well for the pebble beige.
Image

Here we go perfect 69' ranger bed for the 250.
Image

Here it is with the new bed on.
Image

Back at home with the trailer, and with my 84' bronco.

Image

There is what's been going on more to come.

Bed looks good and I dig the bronco as well. I've always wanted either a crewcab bump or a 78/79 bronco. Well, I got the CC bump so I guess my bronco dreams will have to wait.

Thanks fella i'm just getting fired up on this project. My first truck was a 72 f-100 390 3 speed my uncle gave me. However it was thrashed but i got the 390. I've been wanting a highboy since i was a junior in high school. I'm 21 by the way (Iknow a young punk) But i've always loved the bump sides, and dentsides(but not as much) My second love is bronco's I work for www.thewebwheeler.com, and my bronco is my project since i write For broncodriver magazine. www.broncodriver.com You'll find my 84' in there a good bit. I figured i'd state this to kinda get to know some of ya'll a little better. I've talked to71Long bed a little but don't know alot of people here. So just giving ya some back ground. THANKS for the compliments.

i started fixing brackets.
Image

A little flat black on some c8 brackets that is more correct for this truck.
Image

There we go.
Image

Then for my tach Mounted where i didn't lose visibility.
Image

On the column with a simple hose clamp
Image

Then is started fixing the birds nest under here. I'll put in a better brake controller later.
Image

Fixed up this mess on the brake lights.
Image

The 1975' realistic speakers are gone
Image

All told here is everything i cut out man what a mess the cb linear, and the brake controller were all wired in on the radio circuit.
Image

Wired the tach up right and it worked out great.
Image

I did notice another problem while under the hood check out my column
found my lower column bearing was toast.
All for now

Yep, looks like your lower column bearing is either toasted or at least slipped out of place. Those are actually fairly easy to check and/or replace.

I've had tailight and trailer wiring problems from day one with this truck so it was time to set it all straight.

First off repaired to connections for the ampmeter.
Image

Then we pulled the taillights out see what i was talking about??
Image

Here is all the excess junk that i pulled out.
Image

Then i pulled the whole rear tail harness out for repairs.
Image

My no right rear tailight was simple. With the custom back bumper it has no tag lights so with out the circuit complete no power made it to the right rear. So easy fix.
Image

The whole time i was working a squirrel in this tree kept bombing me with nut shells...Little son of a biscuit eater....
Image

Now with some parts i rewired the ends were the tailight plugs in with these new connectors from hoppy lightmate.
Image

Then after checking over the whole harness i wrapped ti with this flex tubing Ford used electrical tape so this stuff is not only tougher but it still looks like the factory did it.
Image

Then i drapped the harness back into the truck.
Image

Look at that. great!!! Now i still have to finish my trailer wiring but now i won't get stopped for faulty lights!!
Image

:pianodance:

Oh i almost forgot! What's been going on with the engine??

To correct the 2 inch hole intake to make it work with a 1 3/4 water neck i made a little adpater with some mild steel.
Image

It will hold the high flow thermostat in place nicely.
Image

Then when it's on you won't even know what i did.
Image

More test fit.
Image

The 4100 carb is done man i can't eait to here this thing run.
Image

So my induction package is just waiting.
Image

A little ford blue.
Image

I also got a new dipstick tube that wasn't all bent up.
Image

There now my oil level checks are accurate.
Image

all for now hopefully later today i can pull the engine down, and get the intake off the truck.

Looking Good!

I just pulled about 10 times that much wire out of my truck. I guess the guy just wired in a new plug every time the old one whent out, only he never took out the old one and wired a new one in some place else!

All is good now!

Yeah i know what you mean i've pulled about a mile of junk wire outta of this truck.

Here is what happened today with the truck.

Before pics.
Image

Image

Then pulled the air cleaner cap rotor wires hoses, and the radiator.
Image

My girl came over during this and dove right in she's the greatest. She ain't bad with some snap on tools in her hands either!!!
Image

More stuff out of the way getting closer to pulling the intake.
Image

Guess who pulling off the carb she looked to find a place to put the wrench then pulled this.
Image

She got it off along with the heat spacer and all the other stuff up to this point.
Image

She couldn't pick off the intake though i climbed in for that however it isn't bad on the inside i discovered this is a 360 crate engine from i believe advance auto the engine is clean but the parts transferred are nasty.
Image

THERE IT IS. That is my pesty little oil leak. Thought it was the rear main but it's actually the intake good move...
Image

Then i pulled the lifters (found the dead one), and also looked at the cam. (It's wiped.) The timing chain has 12 degrees of slop (spec is five) SO i've got more teardown to do. I think i stick to a stock or very mild cam since this truck ain't a real drag strip truck.

All for now.

As far as you are into it I'd go ahead and pop it out, check the bearings and at least do a compression check on it (before you tear it out). Looks good inside so it should be ok.

I don't know a ton about motors, but I know enough to say pulling valve covers, timing cover, and intake isn't enough to find the shape of your motor! My 302 looked identical, nice clean oil, nothing wrong with it. Pull the heads and I have TERRIBLE carbon build up on pistons and valves, bent valve stems, ALL 8 piston skirts were at the VERY LEAST cracked. A couple were completely broken off.

What's crazy is I drove it home from an hour and a half or so away!

Hey check this out i found my old memory stick that i thought i had lost. With it a bunch of old pics so we will go back aways.....

Here is where my carb took a crap it flooded over, and filled the number 4 hole full of fuel when i rolled the engine over it just hit a brick wall when i went to crank it.
Image

It was leaky anyway.
Image

So a rebuild kit was in order.
Image

Alot of time in the vat a good kit, and here it was.
Image

I didn't realize how bad in shape it was till i put the new carb on man it ran so much better.

My wiring repair.
Image

More paint that brought it up to date before the teardown last weekend.
Image

The rear bumper before.
Image

Primer
Image

Paint
Image

I cut out the mud flaps.
Image

Done

Just reminising

If the Cam is Bad I would second the motion to pull it out and check it over realy good.
