Maiden Voyage for the '67
The rain let up enough this afternoon to put the new brake shoes on the front. Got that job done and cleaned the rear brakes. Noticed at this time one of the rear shoes is missing some material, that explains the grabbing brake back there. Put it all back together and drove it to the gas station. 3.6 miles round trip, didn't break down, blow up, burn down, run out of gas, or run me into a ditch!
Seriously, drove and handled well, only real annoying thing was that exhaust leak.

re: Maiden Voyage for the '67
Thanks guys. I made some more progress today, first I put in the Protonix. The old points were so fried it made a world of difference, more responsive, idles smoother. Then I put in the other cap, rotor, and wires I had on it. Cleaned out the oil bath and added oil to it. Pounded out that dent in the hood, looks okay, more of just a wrinkle than a dent now. Sanded, primered, painted and put some clear coat over it. Only the paint I had was a brighter white than the truck so it looks out of place, but at least it's protected. Pulled the T-stat housing to inspect the T-stat and temp rating, (and make sure it had one). It was there and a 180` do I cleaned it, the housing, made a gasket and put it all back together. Note to self, pick up anti-freeze.
That's almost it for the mechanical work, just need to replace the plugs, get a longer stud for the carb, and straighten out that bumper and put the signal lens on. Then it's to the in cab repairs, fixing the radio, heater controls, lights, etc. The exhaust manifold will have to wait for a while.
Almost forgot, replace those rear brake shoes too.

re: Maiden Voyage for the '67
I've put about 50 miles on it so far and every thing's going fine. I've straightened out the front bumper and installed the new turn signal lens. Put the correct light bucket in so the R/S headlight's not upside down anymore. Chased down some electrical gremlins, fuel gauge now works, and all exterior lights are good to go, but I need to do some work on that wire plug that comes out of the column, looks like it's been worked on before and they got some of the wires backwards and rather than fix it right they just changed the wires in the rear so now there's a yellow/green and green/yellow mix under the rear bumper. Works, but it ain't right.
Got all of the heater controls freed up and the vent doors opening and shutting. One of the doors wasn't working due to a Timex being wedged in the door it controlled. Lubed everything and it all works good except the coolant valve under the hood, it moves, but it just won't free up enough for the cable to move it. So I left it wide open until I replace it or summer gets here, whatever comes first.
Front shocks are toast and from the looks of them might be OEM.

Please, stop! You're making all of us slackers look bad.
Seriously, good job. Keep it up..... Even if some of us will be jealous/envious.

re: Maiden Voyage for the '67
I can't slack on this one, I only have until the end of April and then it goes on a non-op, so I want to fix and drive while I can.
Yesterday was a nice day, sunny and upper 80's so the wife and I took a little road trip:
Was able to check the millage, 10.44 per. Beats the heck outta the '69 anyway and that includes some towing miles and I'm still running the old plugs.

re: Maiden Voyage for the '67
Nah, the Timex was junk.
In California if you aren't going to renew the license you need to pay a fee to put it in "non-operational" status, sort of a registration limbo so back fees and penalties don't accumulate. If you simply don't pay the registration then penalties accrue and they can add up over a few years to more than the vehicle's value sometimes. And they can place a garnishment on your wages to collect these fees. Up to recently it was $5 to file a non-op, but they just increased it to something like $17. So much for incrementalism, they just outright jack the rates.
You see, we have mandatory insurance here and if you don't have proof of insurance you don't get your tags. Registration on this truck runs out on April 30th and I'm already insuring four, soon to be five, vehicles and this isn't one of them so it's getting parked for the time being.

Sold this truck a couple of months ago. Got $500 for it. Guess that's alright since most of what I put in it was elbow grease. Hopefully it's new owner will take care of her.
