Alternator Light Will Not Go Off..............

Post by Yakima »

I have a 1969 F250, with a 460. For the past few days the alternator light will not go off. It stays the same. Turning the lights on does not make it do any dimmer. It is running fine. The battery is strong and I have no problem starting it, but the alternator lights stays on all the time. Anyone know what might be wrong. Thanks.

Measure your battery voltage across terminals with voltmeter while engine is running and see what you have. Above twelve is normal.

I know from experiance that a bad voltage regulator will cause the light to stay on.Mine was an electronic regulator and not a mechanical one.

The lights on because of a voltage imbalance between the regulator/alternator and the battery. When the imbalance is great enough, the light burns as a current flows. If the battery seems to be good, then the charging system probably is at fault. Have alternator tested. If good then voltage regulator is probably bad. You are probably overcharging the battery which will cause it to fail.
