1969 F250 Drum brakes

Post by Fordinblue20 »

Hello,
I have a 1969 F250 360 FE 2wd drum brakes all the way around. I am have a lot of trouble with the front drum brakes. The guy I brought the truck from completely messed up the front. I have all the parts to do the front drum brakes but I have no reference because the guy messed up both sides on the front. Does anyone have pictures? or I can take pictures if someone would like to correct whats in my picture. Thank you!

If you go to the Technical Articles section at the top of the page where you find the Discussion Forum you are on. You will find in the upper left corner under Home a place where you can click on Diagrams & Schematics. Click on this, then click on Section B (Brake Assembles and Components). The 4th one down is the diagram Front & Rear Brakes- Self Adjusting-Typical. Click on the diagram and it will enlarge. Maybe some one can post this for you.

Good Luck!

Here's the diagram. http://www.fordification.com/tech/image ... ont_01.jpg And here's a couple of photos of my rear brakes for a visual. Front and rear are pretty close to being identical. Remember, long shoe always goes to the rear.

That wire anchor goes into the shoe and then you bend the tab over to secure it to the brake shoe.

Be VERY careful applying the brake pedal with no drum installed, you can blow those wheel cylinders out, then you will have a mess. One plunger in the wheel cylinder can have less resistance than the other so it will move first. but typically once that side moves a bit the other will catch up. as long as both sides move by hand in and out you should be ok.

Didn't realize there was such a big difference between F100 anf F250 brakes. Robroy did a great write up on his rear brakes. Except for the E-brake hardware, they're very similar. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... hp?t=49962. You can get a new hardware kit at your local parts store. https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b/br ... ware&pos=2

Do you have any idea how to separate the drum from the hub without a press?? I just purchased 2 front drums and didn’t realize that I need a hydraulic press to separate the hub from the drum.

I've used a 50 ton press and have actually shattered the old drum pressing it off. I would press out the studs first as they are mostly responsible for holding the drum onto the hub.

Will I have to purchase new studs? I was hoping I could reuse the original ones. I will have to call a few shops tomorrow to see if anyone one has a press.

I have used a brass hammer or brass punch before to pop those studs out one at a time. brass takes a beating but the studs usually survive.

I’m going to try the brass hammer! Hopefully that works.. I found a machine shop that may do it. He said he needs to see the drum and hub first. Thanks to you guys! I got everything back together I just need to order a new drum and do the passenger side.

Yeah the studs are reusable. They are swedged in at the factory to hold the drum onto the hub.
