Factory high output alternator?

Post by Busboy »

I just bought a 71 base model custom f-100. I think it has the factory optional larger alternator. There is an additional relay under the right side horn near the voltage regulator. It all looks factory. Does anyone have any experience of photos of this? I can't find anything in the wiring diagrams.

The little relay should be for the horns. Takes the negative ground signal from the button to fire that relay which puts 12v to the horns.

There were some larger alternators used on he big trucks, physically larger. Shouldn't be a big deal unless you have an alt gauge, then all the current is flowing through it and back to the battery.

No, it's not the horn relay, again, this one is under the right side horn.

Probably an add on from a PO. Is it wired to anything? What does it look like?

It's factory installed.

Odd looking alternator. Never seen one with a back like that. Does it have a serial no/model no plate on it?

Aftermarket headlamps maybe? I’ve seen relays mounted there for those high speed lights before. It does look factory, though. I have condenser in the same spot on mine.
