packing the bearing

Post by Billybobjunky »

oh yeah, bought new rotors, bearings, seals and calipers. So my question is, since i'm about to pack these bearing, do i really, really need wheel bearing grease, or will that generic red stuff be ok? I have a lot of the red stuff here whereas i'd have to go buy some wheel bearing grease. Thats that. Also, i'm usin a bearing packer. Does the grease go in the receiving cup or inside the inverted cone? Thanks guys!

I would strongly suggest using wheel grease. For example: we put that red stuff on our race car, and the third race out, we burned up the bearings, ever since, we have use the good stuff and have never had a problem. I would also pack the bearings by hand. even though it is messier, at least i know that it is full as can be. and as far as th cone or the cup, i'm not sure

Hope this helps :D  8) :)

Most definitely use wheel bearing grease. It's formulated for the very high temperatures those bearings will see...normal grease will not hold up, and as mentioned by Allen, you WILL burn those bearings up.

I always pack mine by hand too, so I can make sure it's done right.....better safe than sorry.

After Christmas, my son and I went on a public youth hunt and he shot his first buck. we pulled up to the house and he ran inside the house to tell his mom that something was messed up on my truck and we would have to use her new car to haul the deer to the processor....and we couldn't waste any time as it was pretty warm outside.

you all can guess what her reply was!

i've been told by several people of authority, that you do not pack the cup or cone. do not use anything other than what you can actually pack into the bearing.

hate to do something twice, you bought new bearings, they deserve bearing grease.

A light coat on the inside of the hub and races, pack the bearing full.
Use moly grease. Make sure everthing is real clean. Use new seals. Adjust it like this, tighten the nut with a wrench as you spin the hub till it's
snug. Back it off. Now use finger power to tighten it as you spin it. Now
ck. it. You should just have a couple thou. of end play in the front, maybee
5to 10 in the back if it's a floater. Put the castle nut on and pin it.
Do it this way and you'll never have trouble. :)

Been lurking here a few days and thought I'd chime in here with a simple bit of advice.

I always pack a little extra grease behind the outside bearing and inside the cap. On two ocassions, one for me and one for someone I was helping at a rest stop on the turnpike I was able to use the extra grease to re-pack a bearing and get them on down the road. Now I KNOW none of us would EVER let our wheel bearings go that long..... but if you are on the side of the road/trail and have to do a quick fix to get home a little extra can get you there.

well that is a good reason to put grease in the cap.
