Dana 24 T-Case Question

Post by skeeterg49 »

I have a '72 F250 4x4 with a NP435 and Dana 24 divorced case. I have never had any trouble with it slipping out of 2wd like I read about in some of the other posts but I have no 4-Hi, just 4-Lo. When I shift from 2wd into neutral it's smooth and then I can feel it go into 4-Hi but I still only have 2wd. When I push the shifter all the way forward, it engages 4-Lo just fine and stays in. I've taken it out in the field behind my house in the snow to "run" it a little and that is when I noticed it. Anyone got any ideas as to what I can do for it? 4-Lo and a Dana 60 rear with 4.10 gears doesn't give you much in the way of speed if you want to take it on the road. :D Thanks for the help in advance. is the front axle actually getting power in 4-lo? sounds kinda like the front hubs are not locked in to me. you would not feel the difference unless you needed the 4wd (in 4-hi) but you sure feel the difference when it goes into low range.
I use my truck all the time in low range with the front hubs unlocked, just for greater control of the torque.

Try adjusting the shifter linkage. I believe you ajdusted it to make the linkage longer.

To answer the first reply... everything works perfectly in 4Lo and all wheels will spin and or pull whichever the case may be at the time. I was looking at the shifter knob for the transfer case and it goes from top to bottom...

4Lo

N

2Hi

4Hi

Is this the correct knob for a Dana 24? If so, when the person I purchased the truck from installed the 460, it actually moved the case toward the back about 2 inches or so and I wouldn't be able to shift to 4Hi because it is hitting the back edge of the hole for the shifter. I guess I should look more closely and not post stupid questions. Thanks Billy

Yes, that is the correct sequence for the D24.

Why would everything get shifted 2" back? :hmm:

My 460 installation didn't require any repositioning of the tranny or the Tcase.

I was curious about the movment also as I put the C6 in mine and it moved the tranny mounting spot back and I use a shorter driveshaft between the t-case and the x-case. With a manual it shouldn't have moved.

Sorry Greg I still haven't made it to the storage yet. :D

That solves my problem for now. The only reason I can think is that the 460 came from a '77 Lincoln and not a truck so he fabricated motor mounts for it and it isn't exactly where it is supposed to be but I don't know for sure :hmm: . I haven't had much time to spend with the truck and have only had it for about one year. Over the summer I had to replace the turn signal switch and clean up the wiring in the rear and after I got that done I was just happy to be able to get her on the road some. Thanks for the help guys. Billy
