First I would check all the connectors on your altenator and then your starter cylanoid. If any of these are corroded real bad they will act up. It really sounds like the altenator itself has had it, but check those connectors out first.

I'd check connections, starting with ground connections, and at the same time look for any place it could be shorting.... from things jumping around and the lights going dim, I'd be very suspicious of an intermittent short somewhere.
