C 4 to AOD

Post by 75F100 »

I replaced my 240 I6 with a 351 C. The C 4 transmission fit up and worked fine but it is very low geared. It raps up pretty tight at 70 on the road. I was thinking of going to an AD transmission to get higher speed at lower RPM. Has anyone made this change? Does the speedometer cable, cooler lines, and vacuum hoses match up?

Anyone know where I can get some 302 engine perches? I have my V8 sitting on relocated I6 perches. [/list]

Not sure on the specifics, but I know that an AOD will replace a C4 in a 5.0 Mustang. Just get one that's non-computer controlled.

Should bolt right up to your C.

Make sure to hook up the TV linkage correctly or you will burn out your tranny.

If in doubt install the tranny and then tow it to a tranny shop and have them set up the TV linkage for you.

They work fine for light duty pickup work but you must set them up correctly or they are toast after about a couple hundred miles.

OK really stupid question. What is the TV linkage? I no kick down right now. I have a Edelbrock 1406 which I can add a kick down to and can copy the v8 kick down arm from my neighbors truck but haven't really needed it as the C 4 is vacuum controlled. If I put the AOD transmission in I will go to a Mega shifter on the floor. The kick down and shifter linkage are all I know about.

TV cable is for what controls the line pressure instead of the modulator and kickdown rod. You MUST hook it up.

You cannot hook it directly to a conventional carb Ford kickdown. You need a cable form Lokar (possibly others).

If I understand, the C4 uses vacuum to the modulator. The AOD uses a cable from the TV on the transmission to my throttle body on my carb. Does this mean I can get rid of the vacuum lines?

yes.

I made my own bracket from the original on the F.I. motor and welded it onto a universal carb linkage bracket from the parts store.

I'm interested in any info any of you have on this. I'm currently hunting an AOD to bolt onto my 302 in the 68.

Thanks

the one piece of advice that I would give you first and foremost is not to buy a trans unless you physically carry it out of a transmission shop (warranty) or you pull it out of a vehicle that you can drive for yourself to see exactly how well it works. Autos are such a dicey proposition that I have gotten to where I don't even want one anymore. Ever. Oh and when you are installing this trans, make darn sure you get the torque converter seated ALL THE WAY... I have seen several transmissions get trashed because somebody didn't get the converter hub seated in the pump and they tried to pull it together with the bellhousing bolts.
Good luck

I have an AOD in my truck behind a SEFI 1989 Mustang 5.0 and it's nice! With 4.11s in the rear I can still cruise at a reasonable RPM and I've gotten as much as 19.5 MPG. LOKAR sells the necessary cables/brackets to hook the TV cable to a Holley.

SVT522, did you do the Mazda 5-speed tech article? If so, did you ditch the 5 speed in favor of an AOD, or is this a different truck?

Regardless, I have a mild 302 waiting to go my shortbed. A 390cfm holley will go on it for now, maybe a mustang type FI some day. I have an AOD out of a crown vic to go in it to. Right now it has a 3.25 rear. How are the 4.11 gears? I was think either that or 3.90, but with gas the way it is, had thought about 3.7 something or maybe 3.54. do you feel the 4.11 is a good all around gearset? Have you tried other ratios?

Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

Yes the 5-speed is out and the AOD is in! The 5-speed started getting noisy...and I was getting ready to retire from the USAF at the time so I swapped in the AOD I had laying around. I hope to go through the 5-speed and put it back in...it was more fun to drive with it!
