NP435 2WD Transfer Cases

Hello, my truck (‘69 F-100 4x4 ShortBed 360) has got the NP435 with a Dana 21. From what I’ve read that’s the only transfer case that’ll directly match the transmission right? I got a couple of questions for upgrading the transfer case:

1) Are there any good transfer cases I can directly attach to the NP435 in place of the Dana 21 with a Hi-Lo range?

2) Do I need the Novak adapter to use a different transfer case? If so, will this affect how the transfer case attaches to the cross-member?

3) Is it possible to put a Dana 24 in this truck?

4) Will I need to cut up the floorboard to fit the two handles of a new transfer case?

You could get a NP 435 and married 205 T case from a '76-'79 truck.
You'll probably have to do some fab work on the rear crossmember.
Better yet buy a whole parts truck and adapt the power steering and disc brakes too. :D
Also get the front drive shaft , and you'll need to shorten the rear.

Holy smokes that would be a lot of changes. I had the transmission rebuilt about a year ago so it’d be a shame to have to throw it into storage. I’ll look into that though, thanks!

You could change the output shaft to a 4wd one and keep your rebuilt parts. and get a 205.
I don't think there's enough room for a divorced T case in a short box. And that would take a lot more fab work.

I’m OK with doing some fab as long as it’s not removing much material from the cross member. Are you talking about the Novak adapter for changing it to a 4WD?

I was thinking of getting a NP 435 and married 205 T case. You can swap the output shaft with your rebuilt trans.
No matter what you do you'll need driveshafts.

What are your plans with the truck? I've put in a lot of years with these trucks , unless you're doing a lot of serious off road , the stock T case and creeper gear will serve you well.

I was originally doing a lot of rock climbing (any rocks that could be climbed with it), but I’ve moved and am now in an area with mud, sand, and steep wet hills. I was looking to just find a transfer case with a low range for crawling over fallen trees.

I’m no professional off-roader, just thought it would be nice to have a low range for 4wd. I’m open to advice.

Just to make sure I’m following; the output shaft is that ~6” extension piece between the transmission and the transfer case right?

The output shaft is actually part of the transmission. Then the adapter between the trans and T case holds things together.
There are actually two different lengths for the automatics. "78-"79 Bronco had longer ones than the trucks.
I'm not sure about the 4 speeds.
