Power Steering Bracketry Woes

Post by ToughOldFord »

Many, Many moons ago when I did my 360 to 390 swap I didn't get the power steering pump and brackets to line up correctly. I had to use some washers to shim it out some, and it works, but it's still so misaligned it's not funny.
Here's the poop, it was all a perfect factory fit when the 360 was in there. Everything from the 360 was swapped to the 390, there shouldn't have been any issues with this install, but it's there. Not too long ago I had to replace the water pump so while I had it apart again I tried again to get it to work right. Still no luck, looks like hell.
Soon I'll be working on replacing the air compressor so I'd like to get this PS bracketry finally ironed out. Hoping someone has one insight on this particular bracketry, I know a lot of different variances were used on the FE over the years. No luck searching the net. What did I do wrong? Am I missing some factory spacer(s)? Anyone? TIA! Pictures to follow. :fr:

Pic 1: Style of bracketry and pump installed. Note, I don't see the ac brackets as the problem as they are on top of the p/s brackets.

Pic 2: Red arrow to the washers I used as a spacers. You can some of the belt's issues here, but a better pic coming up.

Pic 3: Red arrow to what I believe is a stock spacer between bracket rear and block.

I ran into the same problem when I installed p/s on my 360 with the other style pump bracket and ended up turning a set of aluminum spacers to get the alignment right because I also couldn't figure out if it was supposed to have them or not - stacked flat washers until I got the proper alignment then measured them to get the dimensions to make them with.........

I might have to do that. I just hate mysteries though, I'd like to know what I'm missing here. Should have paid more attention when I did the swap, but that's hindsight.
Also, 10 years ago all the wrecking yards around here had lots of Bumps, today they have none. All in China now I suppose, so I don't even have the option to go down to the yard and find one that's the same and right...

I've never seen that type of FE PsS bracket. Mine is the slotted type. I tried to attach pictures but it says the file is too large.

I know the kind your talking about. Pics have to be 500kb or less. If it's on your phone, view the pic and take a screen shot of it. Then crop it down and save it. That usually works for me.

Thanks Randy, that first diagram may help. I see what look to be spacers there, so when I disassemble mine I'll see what does and doesn't match up.
Here's hoping.

When ot comes to phone pics a good tattic is to go to the modify screen and place a dot or small line someware. The save. It will compress the file size. This particularly helpful with Iphones that like to default to large pic file sizes.

It should be under the fourm file size limit after doing this.
