67-72 Dana 70 Dually interchange questions
Hey guys, I recently got ahold of a 70 F350, its been sitting up since 98'. Put on a spare carb a new fuel pump and ran it off a Jerry can and turns out she's got a strong heart. The old guy I got it off of told me that he blew up the rear end back in the early 80s and put another rear end under it. And he says he knows its not from a Ford. And he can't remember what the axle came out of. He thinks it may have come out of a Chevy....its a Dana 70...Brakes are a leaky mess from sitting and not knowing what the axle is out of makes getting brake parts kind of difficult. Also its got a custom shock setup on the back that is kinda scary looking! And I want to source a axle out of a Ford so I can use factory shock mounting points and know what kinda brakes I can order.... are these axles specific to the 67-72 or will the 73-79 Axles work? Any info would be of great help! Thanks!

My 72 F-350 with a Dana 70 doesn't have any provisions for rear shock absorbers at all.

An early 90's Ford Sterling 10.25" rear from a dually box truck will bolt in. You also get decent options for the gear ratio. I'm running 3.50's in my Cummins swap and all of the parts are still readily available from the auto parts stores.

Ya Like I said this axle isn't out of a Ford. Its got shock brackets welded to the axle tubes just and they run directly to the center of and bolt to the bottom of the bed in a Pyramid pattern. Btw this thing was once a Wrecker and has an extremely heavy bed on it, and in fact still has a working PTO driven winch in the back. And you said a box truck so a Regular F350 Axle wouldn't work? Has to be box truck?

Re: 67-72 Dana 70 Dually interchange questions
If I had to do it again I'd def go the newer route like Jamie suggested above for a few different reasons.
1st being the hub on the bump era D-70 is like sourcing hen's teeth!
2nd being that the dent era D-70 came with a smaller axle shaft bearing, (making it a weaker axle).
Loved and had so little trouble From the 11 years of running my D-70 on my 71' F-350 but finding parts for them is getting harder and harder.
And like Busboy said above I'm pretty sure none of the cab chassis had shocks on them as mine didn't either, (why I added 2K lb bags on mine to styop the spring only "bunny hop" it had).

Mine had a camper body and had shocks. Probably to keep the dishes from breaking.

Re: 67-72 Dana 70 Dually interchange questions
Looked at it more today and the shock perches on the axle aren't factory. Also I've determined that this axle is probably out of some sort of Chevy, The drums are finned. But I won't know for sure until I get a hub off and see what sort of Brake hardware is in there. I work for an auto parts store so have access to some interchange software with pictures and all the ford and Dodge drums I've found don't have fins on the outside of them there all smooth, Chevys on the other hand were finned. For now I just want to get it road worthy I will swap out the axle for a more modern one later.
