1970 4x4 Power Assist to 4x2

Post by lloyd70cs »

Hello Everyone,

Its been a while since i've been here. I got distracted from working on my truck. I've been restoring a 1960's garden tractor instead. Don't despise the day of small things :)

I have been wanting to convert to power steering on my 1970 F250 4x2 Camper Special. I already bought a 1979 f250 4x2 front end off a gentleman, which i may still be able to use, just need a shorter shaft i understand (Bendix box is 2" longer than the ford one). It had the disc brake set up too.

But now an item on local craigslist has come up that may be a simpler switch. Its a "complete working ford factory power assist steering system from a 70's ford highboy f250". He says he also has an "integral PS box" available. Not sure what that is.

Can anybody educate me on this a bit.

The power assist unit is a no go for your truck. What you should be looking for is the integral power steering unit. Integral means the steering box has the steering gears and the power unit all in the same box. If the integral box is from the same era of truck should be a bolt on deal. You would have to find the pump and the engine brackets to mount the pump as well as the hoses from the pump to the box. May also need to change the existing pulleys for the pump belt to work. That depends on what you have on the truck now. It's not to bad to add PS and sure makes parking easier.

thanks Mark

do you know if I could use the 79 pump and hoses for the integral box. the 79 setup is a saginaw box and pump and hoses.
also, the seller may have the additional stuff needed.

The Saginaw boxes from 68-79 will bolt right in - the one I swapped into my 68 was out of a 78 f100.....as far as the brackets and pump I can't say because I used everything from a 69 truck.......
