429 swap w/manual trans + married 205 t-case issues
Hello,
Looks like I have bitten off a lot more that I had planned to chew. I'm sure someone has covered this but the search feature doesn't seem to like me. I am fixing up a 1969 F250 crew cab 4x4. I found an old 429 cobrajet with the 435 trans and married 205 transfer case still attached. I bought a set of conversion engine mounts from a forum member of a brand I can't seem to remember (not L&L) and they bolted right up. No problems there. The problems start with the cross members. It is a later model trans with a hydraulic clutch. The slave cylinder is running into a cross member that is riveted to the frame. The trans mount doesn't line up with the cross member at that location. I expected this and figured on drilling it for the later style short mount or using an adapter but it looks like the cross member will be right in the way of the front drive shaft. Has anyone else done this swap? If so, any advice or direction would be great. I will try to post pictures as soon as I figure out how.

Some people are a lot like a slinky. Generally useless, but fun to watch when you push them down the stairs.

You might want to take a look under a few lowboys (77.5-79) f250's for some insight as they run the married setup and have cross members that might be closer to what you need in there now. Btw those mounts are from John over at Autofab.
People like visuals, get some pics up buddy! I load my pics off my phone and ipad to photobucket then share them, seems to be the easiest till you run out of space on photobucket.

Thanks. That gives me some direction to work with. The mounts work great. I have pictures but they are too big. Another thing I need to learn how to do.

Tried photobucket. The pictures are on there but I seem to be running in circles trying to find a way to post them here. Grrrr.

Re: 429 swap w/manual trans + married 205 t-case issues
Ok I learned something new today about posting pictures. Here is the slave cylinder hitting the riveted cross member.
Here is the t-case output for the front shaft running into the bolted in cross member for the trans mount.
Here is a pic of the project as it sits so far. I really didn't want to assemble it until I had the chassis blasted and painted but no time.

Re: 429 swap w/manual trans + married 205 t-case issues
I recently finished putting a 203/205 in my 68 and the adapter that mate the 203 to the 205 is available to clock the either T case in either direction if that would help, you might be able to do the same thing with the existing adapter

Re: 429 swap w/manual trans + married 205 t-case issues
I picked up a later cross member from Tony's Ford Truck parts in Portland. It has a much lower center. I'll put it in when the weather is better and take pictures. I still need to figure out how to make the clutch slave cylinder fit. Likely with a torch.

are you going to use the pedal assembly out of the newer truck for the hydraulic clutch?

Still scratching my head on that one. I'm thinking about trying my luck welding something onto the existing setup.

Re: 429 swap w/manual trans + married 205 t-case issues
Got the cross member problem sorted out under the bell housing. Turns out I'm an idiot and didn't realize someone had moved it. It was wedged forward into another bracket and looked like i was riveted. All good now. I got the body tossed back on. Still an ugly truck but at least I can bring it home now without the city trying to tow it away.

BTW I was looking at your pics and that is not a Cobra Jet engine, it is a Thunder Jet and there is a huge difference. You will thank me the first time you buy top end gaskets LOL. Hawkrod

Re: 429 swap w/manual trans + married 205 t-case issues
You are correct sir! The deception went farther than that. Shame on me for not checking it out before buying. It turns out it is an externally balanced 460 with earlier police interceptor heads on it. Not what I wanted but it works better with the ZF-5 I'm putting in than an internal balanced engine would. I don't have to machine the flywheel made of un-obtanium to work on this one. I was mostly drooling on the parts attached to it when I went to pick it up and didn't look it over like I normally would. I also have a nicely built Thunderjet as a spare. It is actually one of my favorite engines.
