1967 Ford f100 Transfer Case
Hello! I am Rhett, I just introduced myself in the welcome mat board. I live in Idaho, and am twenty years old. I have a 67 f100 4x4 with a four speed, 360. Today my mom wanted to drive it, and I forgot it was in four wheel drive, anyway there was a terrible clank and after we got home I realized that the transfer case broke in half, not on a seam. I guess what I am wondering is if anyone knows of good place to look for a used transfer case. it is just the two speed, no high or low. Anyway I am excited to be in your group and learn more about these cool trucks.

That's not uncommon. Craigslist is probably your best bet.

Hey thanks! Good to know. I actually found one at a local junkyard today for a hundred bucks, a lot easier then I expected! Hopefully I am smart enough to put it inaveragef250 wrote:That's not uncommon. Craigslist is probably your best bet.

My pickup is a 67 M/T with the two speed transfer case, and the transfer case I found is a two speed out of a 74. Should I foresee any problems putting this in with the year difference?

Should have the single speed Dana 21. Guys called them "in and out boxes". They're all the same.Rhettmm wrote:My pickup is a 67 M/T with the two speed transfer case, and the transfer case I found is a two speed out of a 74. Should I foresee any problems putting this in with the year difference?

I'm a little confused, because according to this page, http://www.fordification.com/tech/transfercase.htm the 1974 did not have the Dana 21, but the junkyard is telling me that the transfer case out of the 74 is the same as my dana 21... Any ideas?

The 21 was used through 75 in the F-100.

I think what amazes me is how those stupid D21's can do this. They can make it 45 years then your mom drives it to get groceries the F'er explodes. In 45 years that truck's never been driven 40 MPH through a Christmas tree field with the hubs locked by a drunk 19 year old?

Holy cow! That thing really let loose. Whats interesting is that it doesnt appear to have any damage to the gears inside it looks like the case just literally could take it and cracked like a egg. Thats impressive.

Re: 1967 Ford f100 Transfer Case
Ok, so I replaced the transfer case today! but while doing that I realized that even with the hubs locked if I spin the front tires both in the same direction, the front drive shaft does not spin. (The Dana 21 was in 2wd). So I figured the front differential was messed up... Opened it up and it looks brand new, but while I had it open I jacked the front wheels of the ground and gave one a spin... Nothing moved in the differential, and the joint going right up to the wheel did not spin... Bad Hubs? How hard are they to replace? Where can I find them? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!!!

You should be able to find replacement lockout hubs at any parts store. My favorite is the WARN Premium hubs, but there are others available as well. A new set should come with instructions for replacement, and is a fairly easy process, also a good thing to know how to do so you can take apart and clean/lube at a later time.

Re: 1967 Ford f100 Transfer Case
Well I got the new hubs in it, and found that my front differential is binding pretty bad, what had split the transfer case and ruined the hubs. So I won't be putting it into four until I get that figured out. The differential looks brand new inside, any ideas what could be causing the binding?
