80-91 trucks/broncos have diff keys for the door and ignition. '92 went back to one key for the door and ignition. For me, the '88 will open the '84, the '92 will start the '88, the '84 will open the tailgate window on the '92, the '02 will open but not start the '97. And there's prolly a few more, but haven't tried out or found.

I wasn't clear, my '92 had only one key for the doors and ignition, but I lost it. It turns out the ignition lock has more tumblers in it than the door lock. So if you make a key using the door lock as I did then the extra notches the ignition needs will not be there so the key will work the door locks, but not the ignition, whereas if you make a key for the ignition lock it will work on the door lock as well.

That's okay Fordman, I didn't explain it very well the first time. You can imagine my frustration when the locksmith told me about it when I picked up my door lock and new keys. It would have been nice to know beforehand. :x
Then he says, "don't give up now, you're halfway there!" Gee thanks, I can unlock my truck, but I can't start it. I ended up replacing the ignition, the chrome key-support-turn-thingy was gone anyway. So now I have two different keys for what was originally a one key truck.

i guess what got me messed up was that my 94 has two keys. i think the one key is to the glove box only though. my 93 has only one key what a deal i didn't even think about that truck.

Anybody live close by? My great uncle used to just try somebody else's key. He said that they only made so many different locks and ignitions. I don't have a clue if this is true for these trucks or at all, but it'd be interesting to try :)

yes there is only so many key combos that can be made from the five pin operation of a lock. i have two different trucks with very similar keys but they won't quite interchange. but they are close.
