3G Conversion

Getting components together to do a 3G conversion on my truck.
Painless 3G harness...

I had a stock ammeter converted to a volt meter to keep the stock look...

The back of the gauge should read, "nut cannot touch ground."

It seems like the ammeter wires are the red and yellow wires that are in the C8 connector on the right fender apron. I should be able to run switched power to the yellow wire and ground to the red in order to make the new volt meter operate. The wires run directly to the C10 instrument cluster connector.

Removed this loom and severed the 3-wire, C8 connector...

This is what I made from the C8 connector. Blk/yel goes to battery and powers the cab, Yellow goes to switched power to power the "new" volt meter, red goes to ground to in order to ground the new volt meter.

Ingredients:
1994 Mustang 5.0 130A Alternator
Painless #30831 3G Alternator Harness
Factory Ammeter Converted to Volt Meter

Wire legend:
Yellow/White wire from Alt. plug goes to constant 12V
Green/Red wire from Alt. plug goes to #904 Grn/Red wire from the C9 connector (used to go to original external voltage regulator plug)
Red 6 gauge charge wire goes through 150A mega fuse to battery (+)
Black/yellow wire from 3-wire C8 connector gets fused and connects to constant 12V to power cab.
Yellow wire from 3-wire C8 connector goes to switched 12V
Red wire from 3-wire C8 connector goes to ground
Yellow and red wires from 3-wire C8 connector operate converted ammeter as volt meter

*Note: If you choose to convert your ammeter to volt meter, pay attention to how the gauge shop converts your gauge. The red and yellow wires from the C8 connector could need to be reversed, depending on which post of your newly converted gauge is (+).

Thanks for throwing that information out there. That is one of the projects listed as "I wannas" in my world.
Wow that painless wiring kit is not exactly painless on the budget. I thought the 3G was something that done with "existing" parts. I did understand the factory alternator gauge had to be modified.

Yeah, the kit isn't cheap. You can utilize the loom from a donor vehicle.

budget way:
i went to the wrecking yard and got an alt from a 95 taurus took a long chunk of the big thick charge cable.
the small wires that are hooked to the alt, i cut as much of that out as possible
i went scrounging around the yard for a maxi fuse and holder in the same rating as the one in the taurus. (97 ish f150 iirc)

i used the wiring diagrams in the sticky on here (very simple)
used an impact to remove the pulley from both, used a washer as a spacer and installed the v belt pulley onto the new alt
it bolted right up works perfect

total cost 25 bucks
took maybe a half an hour

65 meteor rideau
05 crown vic

I still have to finalize the wiring. This Ron Francis junction block should take care the crowded starter solenoid...
